CATFILES Version 3.22a
If you haven't used CATFILES before then I would suggest you, at least,
read the sections 5 and 6 in the accompanying CATFILES.DOC.
If you really can't be bothered doing that then:-
1) Create a directory on your hard disk.
2) Copy the CATFILES.EXE and CATFILES.HLP into that directory
3) If you have a copy of an existing CATFILES DataBase (Your BBS
may have provided it, or a friend), this should comprise the
three files BBS_REF.DBF, BBS_FILE.DBF, BBS_DESC.DBF and, optionally,
the files BBS_REF.IDX, BBS_FILE.CDX, BBS_DESC.IDX, then create
another directory (you can use the same one as CATFILES.EXE but it
is better to have these in another directory) and copy these files
into it.
Note: If you have already run CATFILES and created an empty
database then want to replace this with a pre-prepared one make
sure you delete the index files associated with empty database
(the ones with extensions IDX and CDX) then copy the new files
in to replace the old. If the new files don't have any IDX or
CDX it does not matter because CATFILES will build new ones but
NEVER use CDX and IDX from one database with another.
4) Change to the directory which contains CATFILES.EXE and type:-
CATFILES and press the <Enter> key.
5) Make lots of use of the 'F1' key to get on-line Help
6) If you hit problems READ THE MANUAL and if that doesn't help
(never said I was an author!) then use the 'F2' key in CATFILES
to find out how to get in touch with me.
Remember CATFILES strength is in keeping your file listings up to date
and if you are creating a database for the first time it can take some
time depending on the speed of your machine. Reading in 15,000 files
using a 486/33 with hard disk cacheing might take half an hour, but with
a 286 and no disk cacheing it might take HOURS!!
If you fall into the latter catagory you have the following options:
1) Buy a CRAY!
2) Tell the kids that they can't play space invaders today.
3) Put off writing that letter to Aunt Mary, thanking her for the
socks she sent you at Xmas, until tomorrow.
4) Give the Wife/Husband/Partner a treat by talking to her tonight
while CATFILES does it's thing.
5) Finally, if you get tired, you can hit the 'Esc' key and cancel
CATFILES reading the input file. CATFILES will remember where
you finished and, provided the input file isn't altered (other
that adding to the END of it) you can come back tomorrow and
start where you left off. This way you can spread the initial
creation over some time.
Hope you find CATFILES of some use
